Markham Vineyards

We strive to make our Zinfandel pretty, full of raspberry jam with tobacco and black pepper spice. However our dry-farmed, old-vines thought the drought in 2015 was a great time to pump up the density with loads of dark chocolate, BBQ smoke, toasted marshmallow and clove character and we are 100% impressed. This rustic beauty is sure to please even the most discriminating drinker from start to finish. We’re looking for beef brisket served beside homemade mac-n-cheese as the ultimate pairing, but sitting next to an outdoor fire under the stars with a s’more in one hand and glass in the other could certainly work too.

Vineyard Notes
Our Zinfandel features several different blocks of old vine fruit from Markham growers who just happen to have a bit of this juicy grape hiding on their properties. In the Napa Valley, from St. Helena north to Calistoga is referred to as ‘up-valley’ by the locals. And, up-valley is a hot bed for sourcing old vine grapes! This bottling features vines in the prime of their life, averaging about 35 years of age. On its own, Zin is a bright and lively wine. The addition of a bit of Petite Sirah rounds out the mid-palate of the wine, making it extra delicious.
Production Notes
With heavy December rainfall, we had hoped for a normal, wet month of February. Instead we saw the earliest bud break on record and an equally long spring of frost protection worries. However the warm, dry winter brought us our 4th year of drought, freak hail storms and a long, extended bloom in our red varieties. We called the vintage the “hot tub time machine” which behaved much like our 2007 vintage. It began fast and early, but experience has taught us to have patience to wait for flavor development in order to create wines of which to be proud…again!
