PETIT VERDOT 2014
Petit Verdot always packs a punch! Our 2014 is overflowing with huckleberry compote and fruit pie aromas that combine with notes of cinnamon, vanilla & caramel. Floral ripe plum flavors hint of violets and carry a plush entry. The wine continues to build in intensity becoming jammy and holding on tightly through the finish. The complex tannins are balanced by acidity covered in a blanket of sexy new French oak. Better pair with something you can sink your teeth into, as this one bites back!
24.5 months, French Oak (100% new)
Set in a canyon surrounded by wild Bay Laurel trees, the rocky soils provide near perfect growing conditions for our Calistoga estate grown Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although originally planted as a blending varietal in the 80s, Petit Verdot has come on strong as a staff favorite. The clusters in the vineyard are small, true to their namesake, as is the berry size. We love the fact that the vineyard always produces dark concentrated wines to enhance our blends or be shown on its own. The Mondavi clone provides violet aromatics and bright acidity common to the varietal while clone 400 is more lush and balanced, but requires patience to allow the grapes to fully mature. In 2014, clone 400 was fermented separately and left on its skins for nearly 30 days, giving velvety texture to this wine.
The 2014 vintage in Napa Valley celebrated a near-perfect growing season despite receiving less than half the normal rainfall. Late spring rains were well-timed, arriving after budbreak, allowing for even flowering, fruit set and helped power the vines throughout the season. However the third year of continued drought had our red grape yields difficult to accurately estimate, meaning our tank management at harvest was less than ideal. The exciting news is the beauty of this wine reflects the pride we always feel heralding a new vintage of Cabernet here at Markham Vineyards.
